In today’s era of AI and algorithms, getting the news from sources you trust is important. Now, you can take more control over what types of information and news outlets show up for you on Google. The platform’s Preferred Sources feature lets you choose which websites you want to see more from when you search for everything from recipes to workouts to breaking news and more. Here’s how it works.
What is a Preferred Source on Google?
The Preferred Sources tool allows readers to specify the websites and news outlets, such as The Globe and Mail, they enjoy visiting online. After a quick manual selection process – see the steps below – you’ll see more stories and webpages from the sources you choose. For example, selecting The Globe and Mail as a Preferred Source means that when you search for “news in Canada” or “Canadian travel destinations,” you’ll be able to view more of our stories rather than just the ones Google’s algorithm selects for you.
How does it work?
Right now, Preferred Sources show up in a few places on Google, including AI Mode and AI Overviews. For example, if you search for “latest business news” and you’ve selected The Globe and Mail as a Preferred Source, you might see some relevant stories from our website show up with a small badge that says “Preferred.”
Top Stories is another place you’ll see your Preferred Sources. This is a small visual collection of stories related to a searched topic that usually appears at the top of the page. A new visual collection, titled From Your Sources, may also appear.
Why should I add The Globe and Mail as a Preferred Source?
Adding The Globe and Mail as a Preferred Source on Google means you’ll continue to see our reader-focused journalism on breaking news, political analysis, business, investing and everyday living topics. Our stories will show up more often in your AI Overviews, in AI Mode and in Google’s Top Stories collections. And for our dedicated subscribers, it’ll help ensure you never miss a story.
