I received a call from a Norfolk Southern representative advising there may be a tax consideration for non-U.S. residents, as part of the purchase price might be a tax-deferred rollover. I am familiar with the 15-per-cent withholding tax on dividends, but I don’t quite understand what this is all about. Given the uncertainty, I sold a portion of my position in Norfolk Southern to get ahead of the issue, triggering capital gains. Work income will cover our expenses for the next two years, but then we’ll rely on investment income. I’m thinking of a combination of 65 per cent defensive, dividend-oriented, low volatility investments, and the rest in something “stable” as a buffer. But I don’t understand bonds, and after 2022, I don’t trust them.
