Once upon a time, before Indian movies became synonymous with Bollywood fluff, there was Satyajit Ray, a Bengali director whose works, like The Apu Trilogy and Days and Nights in the Forest, ranked him in the international pantheon right up there with Kurosawa and Bergman.

Now, at long last, there are some early signs that India is going indie again, returning at least in part to auteur-driven films with unique and non-formulaic sensibilities. Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat ( Mumbai Diaries) is definitely one example. Buzz has it that Anurag Kahsyap's That Girl in Yellow Boots (a scene from which is pictured above) may well be another.

If so, and something is really happening on the sub-continent, cinephiles take note: Like spotting the rise of the Fifth Generation directors in China, or the first artistic blooms in Iran, you could be surfing a new New Wave. Definitely worth checking them out.
