The Lovely Bones (2009)
It was always going to be a struggle to get a concept like this off the pages of Alice Sebold's novel and onto the screen. After all, the narrator, Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), is a 14-year-old girl who, after being murdered, narrates her own story while sitting in limbo and watching her family grieve, fracture and hunt her killer. Director Peter Jackson clearly enjoyed designing the shifting afterlife; much of his long making-of diary (only on Blu-ray; the DVD has no extras) documents the post-production work.
The Young Victoria (2009)
Meet Queen Victoria (Emily Blunt) - not the dowager-widow of later years, but the strong-willed princess-turned-ruler who loved, loved, loved Prince Albert (Rupert Friend). And meet the eye-popping costumes, which won an Oscar for designer Sandy Powell and get their own bonus feature. "There's a certain amount of suffering and a sort of torturing of the form," says Miranda Richardson, who plays Victoria's mom, but she credits the unforgiving clothes for getting her "into the mindset" of her character.
