Defendor (2009)
Making-of bonus features are often occasions for mutual back-slapping, and much of it feels phony. Not here. Actors Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings, Elias Koteas, Michael Kelly and Sandra Oh make it clear they loved, loved, loved writer-director Peter Stebbings's script about a principled, less than bright street person (Harrelson) who imagines himself a superhero. It's a smart action drama layered with comic moments, filmed on a low budget in 20 days in Hamilton, which probably won't use it as a tourist brochure.
Pirate Radio (2009)
Actually, the Blu-ray edition will be available only in the United States (go figure). The DVD will be out here on Tuesday, but scofflaws faithful to the spirit of Richard ( Love Actually) Curtis's film may hold out for a pirated copy. It's 1966. British broadcasting pooh-bahs won't allow rock music, so pirate station Radio Rock beams its countercultural offerings from a boat on the North Sea. Curtis says half the battle was getting the "rock level" right inside the boat - "not the level of rock music, but how much the set rocked."
