film review

A century ago, the major European powers of the day were assiduously looting the riches of Africa. The lesson of this compelling feature is that, since then, not much has changed. Rachel Boynton deftly compares and contrasts the impact of oil discoveries in two west African nations – Nigeria and Ghana (in its offshore waters). In the former, black gold has engendered a simmering war for the spoils; that recipe, the film implies, may also be followed in Ghana. An object lesson in the hard politics of a big-money sport.
