Known as “fashion’s biggest night out,” the Met Gala is officially an invitation-only fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. But really, it’s an extravagant party for A-listers to wear ostentatious outfits loosely tied to a theme. This year’s theme is Karl Lagerfeld, the German fashion designer who was Chanel’s creative director from 1983 until his death in 2019. Orchestrated by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, the event notoriously prohibits guests from using phones and social media (although they don’t always abide by the rule), so the best way to see all the looks is during the red carpet presentation. The red carpet begins at 6:30 p.m. ET and gawkers can watch the whole event unfold on the Vogue livestream – or check out some selections in the gallery below.
