The Blind Side (2009)
Posterity may wonder why Sandra Bullock won the Oscar over, say, Meryl Streep. Still, if you want one gauge of her performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy, the real-life white, wealthy Memphis woman who provided a home for black teen Michael Oher (played by Quinton Aaron), check out the extra in which Tuohy chats with Bullock ("The accent was hard."). Oher, now a Baltimore Raven, has only one comment about the movie: "It's big-time, but I'm just a calm, you know, laid-back kind of guy."
The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)
There is no idea so wacky that the U.S. military will not pour money into testing it. That was the gist of Jon Ronson's book about a unit devoted in the 1970s to experiments in telepathy, walking through walls (all that empty space in atoms) and staring at goats until they died. The film treats it all as farce, aided by George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey. The extras offer straight-faced interviews with the officers, now retired, who bought into (and still buy into) these "evolutionary tactics."
