Crazy Heart (2009)
Jeff Bridges won his long-awaited Oscar for playing a booze-sodden country singer who is lucky these days to land a gig in a bowling alley. He finds inspiration and more from journalist Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Bridges does his own singing, and has made it clear in interviews that producer-musician T-Bone Burnett's involvement was a key reason he took the role. The DVD has deleted scenes, but the Blu-ray seeks converts by also offering interviews with the cast and alternative versions of the music.
New York, I Love You (2009)
Like 2006's
Paris je t'aime, this is an anthology of seven-minute films with the title city as the common thread. Directors such as Brett Ratner and Mira Nair try their hand; the cast includes Shia LaBoeuf, Julie Christie and Natalie Portman. Inevitably it's a mixed bag, but it's easier to be patient when the films are brief. Bonuses include two films that didn't make the cut, worthy mood pieces directed by Scarlett Johansson (Kevin Bacon savours an off-season Coney Island hot dog) and Andrey Zvyagintsev.
