Operation Endgame (2010)
Think of the non-stop action of the Clive Owen film Shoot 'Em Up and the tricky games of the Coen brothers' classic Blood Simple, and you'll have an idea where to position this film by director Fouad Mikati. Now imagine that the weapons are office supplies (gory death by metal bookend, anyone?). Two teams of U.S. spies are being picked off in a bunker while a time bomb ticks (called Project Endgame, despite the title). The diverting cast includes Ellen Barkin, Jeffrey Tambor, Rob Corddry and Zach Galifianakis. It's a hoot for genre fans.
Jesse Stone: No Remorse (2010)
Tom Selleck is once again excellent as the world-weary detective in this latest made-for-TV mystery inspired by the Jesse Stone novels by the late Robert B. Parker. The former Los Angeles detective drinks too much, hasn't cut the cord with his ex-wife, seeks counsel from the laid-back Dr. Dix (William Devane) and, as usual, is on the outs with the Paradise town council that hired him as sheriff. Serial killings in Boston figure in the plot, but the appeal of the series is in its characters (Kathy Baker returns as deputy Rose) and atmosphere.
