Summer Sounds, Maylee Todd, from Choose Your Own Adventure (Do Right Music, video streaming at youtube.com/watch?v=1hZj0KySiKw)
The pixie singer from Toronto celebrates the heat with a two-speed song of vintage Brazilian flavour. The video sees her dancing solo in a leafy park, before a spooky bridge propels her into outer space for an intergalactic dance party. Sound like your summer so far?
Open Eyes, Sleepy Sun, from Fever (ATP Recordings, video streaming at sleepysun.net)
The California rockers point their starship toward the spirit realm, for this ultra-groovy piece of psychedelic reverie. The cathartic ambitions of the music are cleverly balanced by the video's cheesy special effects.
I Loved You, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, from Pushkin Romances (Delos, streaming at bbcmusicmagazine.com)
Pushkin is an inescapable figure in Russian vocal music, from opera (Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Queen of Spades, to name just two), to a huge volume of songs by all and sundry. Cesar Cui's I Loved You finds a limpid tune for the short, heartsick poem and gives it the simplest of piano accompaniments, on this album by the soulful Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky.
