Rocker Matt Mays won three major trophies at the Music Nova Scotia awards event in Sydney on Sunday. For his album Coyote, Mays earned recognition in the male artist, recording and rock recording categories.
Luke Boyd, the rapper from Enfield, N.S., known professionally as Classified, one-upped Mays in the trophy-haul department. He was recognized in the music video category and was judged the SOCAN songwriter of the year for his platinum-selling single Inner Ninja, featuring David Myles. Classified's two other wins were for hip hop recording and digital artist.
The up-and-coming singer-songwriter Mo Kenney had also had a successful Sunday. After her self-titled debut album earned her kudos in three categories at the Sydney event (new artist, female artist, pop recording), Kenney was picked as the year's most notable new/emerging artist at the Canadian Folk Music Awards gala in Calgary later the same day.
For its 2012 album Death & Taxes, the rough-and-tumble Stanfields won for group recording. As well, fans voted in the band as the entertainer of the year.
