Night Work

  • Scissor Sisters
  • Universal

Like Alicia Bridges, the Scissor Sisters love the nightlife - particularly the mirror-balled wonderland of after-hour dance clubs. Night Work, in its calculatedly ironic way, is both a heartfelt tribute to the New York electroclash scene of the 1990s, and an attempt to make that demimonde sound as safe as any BeeGees oldie. The band's bottomless capacity for camp is a plus in this regard, helping to make putatively kinky fare like Any Which Way seem just naughtily outrageous (and deliciously catchy). But it's the retro cast of the synth-smart grooves that seals the deal, cushioning the edge of the lyrics with the sweet comfort of old-school rhythms.
