Following her Just a Little Lovin', a sublime 2008 tribute to Dusty Springfield, the southern chanteuse Shelby Lynne suffered from writer's block. She never quite got over it, evidently. Tears, Lies and Alibis, uninterestingly self-produced by Lynne and released on her own new label, is a sparse, flimsy record with faint charisma. A sample simple lyric: "My love for you can't tell a lie / without you, I would die." My favourite track is Home Sweet Home, with its willowy guitar strum, but, mostly, the wistful material is underwritten. The boutique Nashville label Lost Highway passed on this record, and so should you.
