The Lucy Show: The Official Second Season (1963-64)

This is the sitcom that followed I Love Lucy (1951-60) and preceded Here's Lucy (1968-74). All were an excuse for Lucille Ball to exercise her comic talents, whether talking herself out of a bind or tumbling into slapstick. No longer with ex-husband Desi Arnaz, here she co-stars with I Love Lucy cast-mate Vivian Vance and the marvellously slow-burning character actor Gale Gordon. CBS aired the show in black and white (see the extras for examples), but Ball's company shot it in colour, as it appears here, all the better to show off her flaming orange hair.

Selling Hitler (1991)

As hoaxes go, the alleged diaries of Adolf Hitler were low-rent. Even the paper wasn't made until after Hitler's death in 1945. But Konrad Kujau (played in this British miniseries by Alexei Sayles) swore the diaries were authentic, and Gerd Heidemann (Jonathan Pryce) of the German magazine Stern was among those who fell for Kujau's forgery. Played at times straight and at times for laughs, the show offers Barry Humphries (Dame Edna) as media tycoon Rupert Murdoch and Alan Bennett as shamed Hitler expert Hugh Trevor-Roper.
