Extra, extra! Newsies – a musical inspired by New York's newsboys strike of 1899 – will play in Toronto in the summer of 2015, Mirvish Productions announced on Wednesday.
Based on the 1992 Disney movie, the Broadway hit will be staged at the Princess of Wales theatre for a six-week engagement as part of a North American tour to at least 24 cities. Songs are by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) and Jack Feldman, while the book is by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein.
Nominated for eight Tony Awards in 2012, Newsies won two – for Menken and Feldman's original score (the musical features seven songs not in the movie) and Christopher Gattelli's choreography.
