Alice (2009)

Director Nick Willing loves imagining the dark cores of fantasy classics. His 2007 cable-TV miniseries Tin Man had its way with The Wizard of Oz, and now, like Tim Burton in his theatrical Alice in Wonderland, he finds fresh corruption. Alice (Toronto native Caterina Scorsone), a twentysomething martial-arts instructor with - oh, heresy - dark hair, encounters a Queen of Hearts (Kathy Bates) with a malevolent line in soul-snatching. Also on board: Matt Frewer as the White Knight and Harry Dean Stanton as the Caterpillar.

Simon & Simon: Season 4 (1984-85)

A lot of brothers can't keep their eyes on the prize. Don and Phil Everly famously feuded, as did Oasis lads Liam and Noel Gallagher. But in the world of TV private eyes, mismatched brothers A.J. (the uptight one, played by Jameson Parker) and Rick (the laid-back one, played by Gerald McRaney) stayed together from 1981 to 1989. They do split up this season in a two-episode story, but you know it won't last. Heck, as long as they can cut it for an hour a week, the rest of the time is their own.
