The Material Girl's second directorial effort, W.E. follows a contemporary woman (Abbie Cornish) infatuated with the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in the 1930s. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week to mixed reviews; make your own assessment of Madonna tonight.

The Lady is the true story of Aung San Suu Kyi – the Burmese activist and political prisoner – and her long-distance relationship with her husband. Michelle Yeoh ( Memoirs of a Geisha, Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) stars as the woman at the core of Burma's democracy movement, alongside David Thewlis as her husband.

THE EVENTS
Three-hour segments of The Story of Film: An Odyssey – a whopping 15-hour documentary about films from the silent era to the digital age – will be shown for free each day this week. The movie about the movies is an adaptation of filmmaker and historian Mark Cousins's book. For those that don't have time to read the book but can spare a weekend to see the film in full, it will be shown in two long parts this Saturday and Sunday.

Salman Rushdie and director Deepa Mehta will discuss the challenges of adapting the controversial and critically acclaimed novel Midnight's Children for the screen. The event will also include a few scenes from the yet-to-be-released film, which wrapped this summer after shooting in Sri Lanka.

Estelle will perform at the Diet Coke Stay Extraordinary Gala. The invite-only, Old Hollywood-themed affair promises cigarette girls, cocktails and an exclusive menu from Toronto's Parts & Labour.
The Hoxton, Monday, doors open at 9 p.m., performance starts at 11:30 p.m.
Seth Rogen is expected to show up at the exclusive official premiere party for 50/50 after it screens at the Ryerson Theatre. Other guests expected at the bash are Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard.
