She was headed to Walmart to “beg for food” and told me she rides the bus for free because she’s a senior. I asked her about the election, and she replied, “I don’t give a f*ck about the election, what I care about is enough food to survive. See how skinning I am? “What she cares about are basic human needs. She didn’t want to give me her name but wanted to tell me about the poverty she lives in. 16.8% of New Mexicans live in poverty, in comparison to 11.4% nationally and one in four children live in poverty in the state.
