Investigations

Grant Robertson is a Globe and Mail journalist who specializes in detailed investigations that bring accountability to complex subjects, including government oversight, problems in the health system, flaws in Canada’s food safety inspections, corporate wrongdoing, stock market manipulation, and the hidden causes behind some of Canada’s deadliest transportation disasters.

A member of The Globe’s investigative team in Toronto, he has been recognized internationally for investigative reporting, business journalism, national news coverage and feature writing. His work has exposed crimes in the financial markets, unethical practices in the pharmaceutical industry, the muzzling of top scientists within the federal government, counterfeit currency and money laundering driven by organized crime, and failures in the airline and rail sectors that led to deadly consequences. He has worked as a political reporter on Parliament Hill and his writing has also appeared in Report on Business Magazine and Sports Illustrated.

In 2023, he won the Michener Award, Canada’s highest honour in journalism presented by the Governor General, for his investigative work that exposed Hockey Canada's secret funds for sexual assault settlements.

He was also awarded the Canadian Association of Journalists' McGillivray Award as Investigative Reporter of the Year, and the Canadian Journalism Foundation's Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2023, for his three-part investigation into Hockey Canada’s opaque financial dealings.

In 2025, he won his second Canadian Hillman Prize, honouring excellence in journalism in service of the common good, for an investigation that uncovered dangerous lapses in Canada's food safety system, including the deployment of a faulty algorithm that oversaw inspections, which killed three people and harmed many others. He was also awarded a 2025 UNESCO World Press Freedom certificate of merit for that work.

In 2021, he was awarded the Canadian Hillman Prize and the Canadian Journalism Foundation's Jackman Award for a two-part investigation that uncovered serious flaws in Canada's pandemic preparedness and response, including how experienced scientists were pushed aside, federal expertise was eroded, and internal warnings were ignored.

He is the first Canadian journalist to win nine National Newspaper Awards; including business investigations (2004, 2014), explanatory writing (2011, 2016), sports investigations (2011, 2021, 2022), short feature writing (2013), and long feature (2018).

He is also an eight-time recipient of a Michener Citation for meritorious public service journalism, including a 2008 investigation that exposed fatal weaknesses in Canada’s 911 emergency response system; a 2013 probe into the hidden volatility of crude oil shipped from North Dakota in the deadly rail disaster at Lac-Mégantic, Que., which killed 47 people and destroyed the town; a 2017 data investigation into white-collar crime; a 2020 series that uncovered failings in the government’s risk assessments on COVID-19, including security and intelligence concerns; a 2021 investigation into abuse in amateur sport, including the prevalence of serious eating disorders among Olympians; and a 2024 probe that revealed flaws in Canada’s food safety system that led to a deadly listeria outbreak.

He is a recipient of both a U.S. SABEW Award and a Canadian SABEW Award for business investigations, including a probe into the Boeing 737 Max disasters and an investigation into the unforeseen risks of transporting crude oil by rail in North America. He was also part of a Globe and Mail team that won investigation of the year at the 2018 Global Editors Network Data Journalism Awards in Lisbon.

In 2024, his narrative story 'The Wallet' was turned into a documentary by ESPN.

Originally from Calgary, he now lives in Toronto and is an avid runner.
