Business Reporter

Irene Galea is a business reporter for The Globe and Mail's Report on Business, based in Toronto. She currently covers the telecommunications industry. Since joining the Globe in 2021, her reporting has spanned corporate finance, technology and policy.

Irene is also the host of City Space, The Globe and Mail's podcast on the future of cities.

Irene has reported from six countries in three languages for The Globe, including as an Arthur F. Burns fellow, covering European business and politics from Berlin. Her work has earned three Canada Best in Business awards and an honourable mention from the Society for American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW), as well as a Digital Publishing Awards nomination.

Irene's work has been published by CBC, The National & Financial Post, and The National Trust for Canada, and she has appeared as a guest on CTV, CBC Radio and Radio-Canada broadcasts.

Irene holds a Masters of Building History from the University of Cambridge. Her dissertation explored the development of 19th-century bank architecture in Toronto. She received a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University, where she was awarded the University Medal for ranking first in class.
