Kasia Mychajlowycz
Kasia thought she was going to be a writer, then realized she just couldn't stop listening to the then-new phenomenon of podcasts.
She began as an intern in New York at On the Media, then honed her skills at Freakonomics Radio, MTV News, Planet Money and The Atlantic, among other places. She was happy to bring those skills home to Toronto, where she hosted and produced a true crime podcast called Cool Mules before coming to The Globe and Mail in 2021.
At The Globe, Kasia has launched two podcasts; The Decibel, our daily news podcast, and In Her Defence, a true crime podcast.
In her leisure time, she's a sci-fi reader, a retired Muay Thai fighter who still trains, and always wants to hear about your favourite podcast.
Why did you become a journalist?
I believe understanding people by hearing their stories makes the world better – it makes it better for me, anyways. I am transported by journalism – as a journalist and as consumer – to places and situations I'd never encountered in my own life, like court rooms, wars, cutting-edge science labs, but also the everyday lives of people you've never met. I'd always listened to the radio but when podcasts became available on your phone and on demand, I was hooked. I was amazed by the power of hearing people speak directly to me though my headphones. The human voice relays so much information besides the words its saying, and to be able to capture that and weave it into a story while staying loyal to its original meaning is my life's work.
