Neil Davidson is a sports reporter with The Globe and Mail.

Born in Wales to Scottish parents, Neil grew up in England before making Canada his home while attending university. After short stints with Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine and United Press Canada in Winnipeg and Toronto, Neil joined The Canadian Press in 1985 when it bought UPC.

He worked for CP in sports before moving into news as Vancouver news editor, Ontario news editor, Ottawa deputy bureau chief and Toronto supervising newsroom editor. He returned to sports in 1995 and spent the next 17 years as general sports editor before returning to writing in 2012 as senior sportswriter.

While Neil has written on a wide variety of sports, his specialties include soccer, rugby and mixed martial arts.

He has covered six FIFA World Cups (three men's and three women's), two Rugby World Cups, eight Olympics, two Commonwealth Games and two Pan-American Games. Neil has also covered Toronto FC from its inception in 2007, and covered numerous UFC events since March 2006.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was attending the University of Toronto and, after disagreeing with one of their music reviews, visited the Varsity newspaper. They suggested I try my hand at writing a review myself. One thing led to another.
