Sophia Coppolino
Sophia Coppolino is a staff reporter at The Globe and Mail. Reporting from Toronto, she is particularly interested in crime, housing and Canadians' experiences in underreported communities. Previously, she was a staff reporter at the Kingston-Whig Standard, covering housing and the consequences of lack of affordability. Before starting at the Globe, she worked at a crisis communications firm advising some of the largest public entities and private corporations operating in Canada.
Sophia discovered journalism at her university student newspaper, the Queen's Journal, where she was awarded Student Journalist of the Year by the Canadian University Press in 2025 and recognized for news reporting in 2024. She reported on Queen's University's ballooning deficit and a hazing cover-up, among other stories.
Sophia puts an emphasis on providing the subjects of her reporting a fair and meaningful chance to comment, and endeavours to present all sides of the stories she covers fully and accurately.
Why did you become a journalist?
I find that people have more to teach me than I have to tell them. Journalism allows me to share what I learn with others as stories.
