The national payroll institute’s board of directors is pleased to announce the election of brian burgess, plp, as its 2025-2026 chair.
In his role as Chair, Brian will guide the Board of Directors and executive team in advancing the Institute’s strategic initiatives and promoting payroll excellence throughout Canada.
Located in Victoria, British Columbia, Brian is dedicated to strengthening the sense of community within the payroll profession, advancing employee financial wellness, and supporting members to step into leadership roles while enhancing the reputation of the National Payroll Institute and its members as essential to business success across Canada.
To accomplish these objectives, he brings substantial expertise to the position — with extensive progressive experience in payroll and accounting, having earned both Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) and Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) designations. His distinctive career path, beginning in the entertainment industry for over 10 years before transitioning to accounting and payroll, showcases the varied backgrounds that enrich the payroll profession.
Currently serving as a member of the senior leadership team with the Victoria Division of Family Practice, Brian oversees all accounting, payroll and benefits functions while acting as a trusted advisor to management and the Board. He also teaches the PCP program for Douglas College and Vancouver Island University and delivers professional development seminars for the Institute.
Brian has been an active volunteer with the National Payroll Institute since 2013, starting with the Victoria Branch where he served as Vice-Chair and Chair before joining the national Board of Directors in 2020. Throughout his Board tenure, he has fulfilled several important roles including Treasurer, Vice-Chair, Board Assessment Task Force member, and Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force.
