Hudson’s Bay Co. is planning to launch liquidation sales at almost all of its stores on March 24, after receiving court approval. Here is what shoppers need to know about the process.

When and where are the sales happening?

The company is in financial crisis, and has sought financing to keep its operations afloat. So far, Hudson’s Bay has been unable to come up with a plan to save the chain of 80 department stores.Hudson’s Bay will start liquidating most stores on Monday. That will mean inventory clearance sales at all but six Hudson’s Bay stores across the country, and also at three Saks Fifth Avenue and 13 Saks Off Fifth stores that the company operates in Canada.

Hudson’s Bay is continuing to look for a buyer for all or part of the business, and could withdraw stores from the liquidation process if alternatives emerge. The six exempted stores could also be added to the clearance sales, if efforts to find a restructuring plan do not succeed.

The sales should conclude no later than June 15.

E-commerce site TheBay.com will keep operating as it clears out inventory in the retailer’s distribution centres.

I have a Hudson’s Bay gift card. Does it still work?

Yes – but not for long.

The company suspended the sale of gift cards last week, but that still leaves many shoppers holding outstanding cards. Those total roughly $24.1-million as of Feb. 1, according to court documents.

Hudson’s Bay has now put a deadline on the use of those cards. They will be valid only until April 6. Shoppers may use gift cards for discounted merchandise during liquidation sales.

I’ve got Hudson’s Bay loyalty points. What about those?

Plenty of Canadians are in this position. The outstanding points on loyalty members’ accounts were worth a total of roughly $58.6-million, as of Feb. 1. But for now, those points are functionally worthless.

The retailer’s loyalty program has been suspended, meaning that members cannot earn points on purchases or redeem points they currently have.
