Metro Inc. MRU-T says it has officially signed the Canadian Grocery Industry Code of Conduct.

The grocery code is intended to promote fair dealings between grocers and their suppliers, including the application of penalties and fees.

Metro chief executive Eric La Flèche says the company has worked with the code office to ensure its success and looks forward to its implementation in the years ahead.

Explainer: What is the grocery code of conduct, and how could it impact food prices for Canadians?

Metro’s grocery banners include Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Food Basics, Adonis and Première Moisson.

The company also owns drugstores under the Jean Coutu, Brunet, Metro Pharmacy and Food Basics Pharmacy banners.

Sobeys parent company Empire Co. Ltd. EMP-A-T was the first retailer member to officially sign on to the code of conduct earlier this year, while dairy product-maker Lactalis Canada was the first supplier member of the code.
