Police say a man is in custody after two children were found dead in a vehicle along a busy thoroughfare in northwest Calgary Thursday.

Calgary Police Inspector Darren Smith told reporters that police received a phone call around 10 a.m. that led officers to the vehicle, which was stopped.

“A search of that vehicle located two deceased children,” Insp. Smith said.

“At this time, the deaths are considered to be suspicious. Our homicide unit is investigating and has taken over the investigation.”

An unidentified man was arrested nearby. Insp. Smith couldn’t say if he was related to the two young children, both believed to be under the age of 10.

“At this point it is still too early in the investigation. We still need to determine who the children are and at that point we can start to look at who their parents are, who is responsible and what actually happened,” Insp. Smith said.

He said the medical examiner was already on scene and will determine the cause of death. Officers are looking for witnesses to see if they can provide additional information.

On the street, police officers were seen rolling up strands of yellow tape used to rope off an investigation scene as a tow truck hauled away a black Jeep SUV, followed closely by a police truck.

When it comes to the death of children, Insp. Smith said it’s always difficult for officers.

“It was very shocking. It is very hard on our officers. Our officers are human and this is heartbreaking for everyone,” he said.
