From a books archive to federal election results, The Globe’s Data and Digital Storytelling team worked on dozens of stories and tools this year

The Globe’s Data and Digital Storytelling team worked on dozens of stories and tools this year, covering topics from housing, affordability and tariffs to emergency room closures, a federal election and a deep dive into our Books archive. The work included custom-built databases, interactive graphic explainers and immersive, visually-driven narrative pieces.

Here are some notable highlights from 2025.

Databases and reader tools

We kicked off the year building a database of Canadian products and brands in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff announcements and the growing consumer sentiment around buying Canadian. And ended the year with a consumer-focused tool to help readers make sense of the increasingly fractured sports-streaming environment. In between, we published a database of emergency room closures across the country since 2019 and created a books discovery tool with almost 30 years of Globe 100 lists.

Interactive graphics and explainers

We took a visual approach to explaining a variety of topics, including tariffs, how drugs are approved in Canada and the need for more livable apartments and the current building codes standing in the way.

Investigations

Data analysis played a key role in some investigative stories this year, including government procurement practices and a measles outbreak that led to Canada losing its elimination status.

Federal election

And, of course, Canada had an election this year. The team partnered with The Globe’s Product department to produce a live results page for election night, created embeddable riding cards to use across our coverage and analyzed the results in the days after the vote.
