One man is dead following an altercation between a suspect and RCMP officers at Gordon First Nation, near the village of Punnichy, Sask.

Officers were called to the First Nation about 113 kilometres north of Regina at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday for a report of a man armed with a rifle and making threats.

In a news release, the Mounties say the responding police officers discharged a firearm and injured the man. They performed life-saving measures on the man until the Lestock Emergency Medical Service took over, but he was pronounced dead shortly after EMS arrived.

The Saskatchewan RCMP has requested an independent external police probe into the circumstances of the incident. The Weyburn Police Service will be conducting the investigation. The Mounties have also asked that the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice and Attorney General appoint a second independent investigation observer of First Nation ancestry.

Saskatchewan RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said in a statement that the force takes these matters very seriously, and is giving the Weyburn Police Service their full co-operation.
