Toronto police say the man accused of killing an 89-year-old woman in what they believe to be an unprovoked attack is now facing a manslaughter charge.

Police say a 37-year-old man allegedly pushed the woman to the sidewalk in the city’s financial district on Friday shortly after 11:30 a.m.

They say the 89-year-old woman died at the scene.

The accused was first charged with aggravated assault as police waited for the results of an autopsy confirming the cause of death.

Police announced Tuesday morning the charge had been upgraded to manslaughter.

The accused was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.
