The Globe and Mail is hiring a designer for the summer of 2015. The position is a fully paid job and not an internship. We are seeking freelancers, experienced designers from other organizations, recent graduates or students in their graduating year.
The Globe and Mail has won more national journalism awards than any of its Canadian competitors, has been honoured with many Society for News Design awards for both its newspaper and website and has captured two Emmys for video projects. Most recently, The Globe and Mail won a National Newspaper Award for the design of a package on the Lac-Megantic disaster.
Even though this job is just for the summer, the program is a great way to get your foot in the door at The Globe and Mail and its digital properties. We have hired many future senior editors, reporters, digital editors, foreign correspondents and columnists through our summer program.
The position runs from late June to September. It is based in Toronto and paid at a full-time rate. The work involves prototyping newspaper designs, visual story-telling, interactive graphics for mobile, illustration and a dose of photo editing.
The applicant need not have all these skills (though that would be a plus). We're a teaching newsroom with bureaus around the world and reporters at every corner of the country. The work of a designer is wide-ranging and all encompassing.
We are looking for people who have previous journalism experience, whether at a Canadian daily or an online organization or a school paper. We want people who have a true passion for journalism, great drive combined with common sense, and an ability to step into and be a full part of Canada's best news organization.
If you have no journalism or publishing experience through a school, freelance, regular blog or some other organization, you won't make it to the interview stage. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or have the pre-existing right to work in Canada through to September, 2015.
