Survival of the Thickest (season 3), Netflix

Comedian Michelle Buteau’s star vehicle comes to a close with the third and final chapter when it drops on Netflix this week. The dramedy revolves around the adventures of a Black plus-sized woman named Mavis (Buteau) who pieces her life back together after a bad breakup. It’s a fun watch with plenty of fashionable moments, and the third season promises even more of both when Mavis works on growing her brand and influence as a stylist. The terrific supporting cast, including Tone Bell and Marouane Zotti, is back, while Wanda Sykes and Ashley Graham join the final season in guest-starring roles.

Elle, Prime Video

Have you ever wondered what Elle Woods was like in high school? Probably not, but Reese Witherspoon did, which is why she’s executive producing this Legally Blonde prequel starring Lexi Minetree. The eight-episode series launched on Canada Day with a second season already on the way. The show revolves around Elle’s family moving her from colourful Bel-Air to grey Seattle, where her signature pink is one of the most offensive things about her. The series is meant to highlight the formative experiences that made the character who she was in the first movie and is fine for younger audiences, but the familiarity means there’s not much new here for fans of the original.

President Curtis (Keith David) has always been one of the most memorable parts of Rick and Morty, and with adult animation in high demand on streaming services, it was only a matter of time before he got his own spinoff. That time is now with this take that sidelines the original grandfather-grandson duo and focuses instead on how President Curtis deals with the crises that occur as a result of the family’s experiments. That connection aside, it’s a different show, one that embraces paranormal investigations and conspiracies in the vein of The X-Files, while leaning into the workplace comedy of it all.

If British rags-to-riches stories are your thing, head over to BritBox where the TV show based on Barbara Taylor Bradford’s best-selling novel is now streaming its first season in weekly installments. Jessica Reynolds and Brenda Blethyn share the role of Emma Harte, a woman who climbs from the servants’ quarters to riches in the early 1900s. The performances are one reason to tune in, but the melodrama is another. The show embraces it with lots of romance, revenge, feuds and plot twists to keep you hooked. Think Dallas meets Downton Abbey, a.k.a. the perfect summer fodder.

Worst Neighbor Ever, Netflix

Each episode tackles the stories of men and women whose arrival upended their communities with their often unbelievable antics. Part of the fun is watching how these stories unravel and the extreme lengths some people will go to. At the very least it’s a great conversation starter this summer when you attend your next barbecue. You’ll have plenty of bizarre stories to share while waiting for the burgers to flip.
