Whether you’re an occasional fan or a die-hard junkie, this weekend’s two-day SummerSlam event will be a must-watch, defining event for the future of WWE. That’s because two of the most recognizable personalities, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, are facing off with the goal of becoming the defining face of the franchise. This isn’t your traditional “good guy versus bad guy” event; both men come with legacy, honour and respect, but their overall philosophies differ. It’s like a matchup between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning or Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. That’s not the only exciting event to look forward to, either. World Heavyweight champ Roman Reigns will take on his enemy Seth Rollins, Iyo Sky is coming for Liv Morgan’s title, and Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar headline the Hell in a Cell Match.

With so many TV series to wade through, sometimes gems can fall through the viewing cracks. That was the case with this BET series when it debuted in 2024. Although beloved by critics, it failed to gain a mass following. Enter Paramount+, which has not only acquired the first season but is debuting a second season this weekend. The series hails from Diarra Kilpatrick, who writes the series and stars as an unlikely detective. After matching with a date whom she believes is the adult version of a boy who went missing in the 1990s, Diarra begins investigating unserious but dangerous Detroit mysteries. Catch up and don’t be surprised if it becomes one of your favourite rom-coms meets murder mysteries.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is firmly entrenched in the world of TV producing thanks to hits like Power and BMF. This week he continues that legacy with the debut of Fightland, a crime drama set against the high-stakes world of British boxing. It’s Jackson’s first internationally produced series, having filmed in London.The series revolves around disgraced boxing champion Duke Kilroy (Howard Charles) who is released after eight years in prison and returns to the ring. There, he takes on the crime family that betrayed him, paving the way for stories of redemption, ambition and dramatic family dynamics. Nicholas Pinnock and Deborah Ayorinde also star.

Now that The Odyssey has emerged from the Trojan Horse to become this summer’s official smash film, what better time to visit the real sites featured in the mythological tale? Over four hour-long episodes, actor and screenwriter Richard E. Grant traces Odysseus’s 20-year route along the Mediterranean to explore fact versus myth. The U.K. series makes its Canadian debut on Gem this weekend, taking viewers to Turkey, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, Malta, Corfu and the Greek island of Ithaca. Along the way Grant explores the culture that travellers seek today, while participating in an array of activities and adventures, from visiting a sorceress’ cave to performing in an ancient amphitheatre. It’s a fun way to explore the origins of the legendary tale while separating fact from fiction.

On Dec. 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Scotland. All 259 on board and 11 people on the ground lost their lives as a result of the terrorist bomb that was planted on the plane, making it one of the deadliest flight attacks in history. This six-part British scripted drama revisits the events surrounding the attack, and examines how the small town of Lockerbie became intertwined with the global story. The star-studded cast brings the action to life and includes actors such as Patrick J. Adams, Connor Swindells, Merritt Wever, Peter Mullan and Kevin McKidd. It’s a heavy and emotional watch, and although it’s been met with mixed reviews, it’s still an important story that gives a new generation more context about how monumental the moment was.
