Subaru’s newest – and biggest – EV is called the Getaway, but we might not get it in Canada.

The Japanese automaker unveiled the all-wheel drive, three-row SUV – which is basically a quicker, slightly better-looking Toyota Highlander EV – and a hybrid version of the Forester Wilderness at the New York International Auto Show this week. The Getaway was developed in partnership with Toyota, giving both companies four EVs in their lineups.

Because both vehicles are built in the U.S., they “have been placed on pause for the Canadian market while we monitor the ongoing [tariff] situation,” said Julie Lychak, a spokeswoman for Subaru Canada.

The 2027 Getaway will initially launch with a 95.8-kilowatt-hour battery, which will deliver an estimated range of more than 480 kilometres.

It boasts 420 horsepower – about 80 more than the Highlander – and can sprint to 97 kilometres an hour in less than 5 seconds. With an up-to 150-kilowatt charging speed, it can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in roughly 30 minutes. It will come with a Tesla-style NACS port, which lets you use Supercharger stations across the U.S. and Canada.

The U.S. will get a 77-kilowatt-hour version next year – it’s not clear if that would be available in Canada, if the Getaway is offered here at all. When it comes to looks, it beats the Highlander. The front end, especially, is less awkward and more conventionally handsome.

Inside, it’s nearly identical to its Toyota twin, with a 14-inch screen, seating for up to seven and up to 450 litres of cargo capacity.

The Getaway joins the Solterra, Uncharted and Trailseeker in Subaru’s EV lineup.

On paper it’s competitive with rivals, including the roomier Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

Subaru also revealed the Wilderness Hybrid, which has the same hybrid system as the Forester Hybrid. It’s a nod to the growing interest in hybrids, Subaru said.

“We all know hybrids are becoming more popular in the marketplace,” Jeff Walters, Subaru of America chief operating officer, said on stage at the reveal.
