The Volvo EX60 P12 will have up to 640 kilometres of range. Volvo revealed the new SUV at an event Wednesday in Stockholm.Petrina Gentile/The Globe and Mail

With slowing demand for electric vehicles, Volvo scaled back its EV targets in 2024, but said at the time that the company remains committed to electrification. We saw proof of that in Stockholm on Wednesday as the Chinese-owned Swedish car company revealed the all-electric 2027 EX60 midsize SUV and its sibling, the EX60 Cross Country wagon.

While the EX60, which starts at $77,500, falls between the EX40 and the EX90 three-row SUV in terms of size, it has the highest electric range in the family – up to 640 kilometres with an all-wheel-drive system. However, that $77,50 starting price is for a version that has 514 kilometres of range.

According to Statistics Canada data, new zero-emission vehicles accounted for 9.4 per cent of all new vehicle registrations in the third quarter of 2025. Compared to the same period in 2024, that’s a 40-per-cent drop year-over-year. Fully electric vehicles accounted for about 60 per cent of ZEV sales.

“Customers have doubts, range is too short, [it] takes too long to charge, and its too expensive. If you want to change the long-term development you have to address that,” said Hakan Samuelsson, chief executive officer of Volvo Cars ahead of the EX60’s reveal. “Long term, if you want to have electric cars it will not be driven by incentives. It will only be driven by better cars and better prices. If you solve this – range is long enough, charging is fast and the price is good – I think the interest will come.”

Volvo promises no badge engineering as it tightens ties with Geely, and perhaps a new wagon

The new EX60 attempts to tackle those concerns, said Samuelsson. With 640 kilometres of range, it’s higher than many competitors with all-wheel-drive such as the Tesla Model Y Long-range AWD, which has 542 kilometres, the Cadillac Lyriq, which has up to 513 kilometres, and the Audi Q6 e-tron, which has up to 494 kilometres.

Volvo’s new electric architecture, dubbed SPA3, helped achieve the longer range. It uses cell-to-body technology, which boosts energy efficiency, reduces weight, uses less resources and takes up less space in the vehicle, making it more efficient with 31-per-cent faster charging and a reduction in its carbon dioxide footprint by 37 per cent. The EX60 has next-generation electric motors developed in-house, a new battery cell design and mega castings – a Volvo first, which replaces hundreds of smaller parts with larger recycled aluminum casts, reducing material, time and cost while maximizing range.

When it comes to charging, on a 400-kilowatt Level 3 DC fast charger, it can charge 270 kilometres in about 10 minutes. However, there are only a few stations like this in Canada. Level 2 charging info isn’t available, yet.

The EX60 SUV is basically the electric version of Volvo’s best-selling XC60 SUV. Compared with the EX60, the Cross Country sits another 20 millimeters higher.

The EX60 stands out for its impressive list of cutting-edge technology, which includes Gemini, the new artificial intelligence assistant from Google. The onboard AI can understand human language and casual conversation without using specific commands. It’s designed to add a personal touch and make it easier, safer and more convenient to get information without taking your hands off the steering wheel. It’s the first Volvo to launch with it and the most technologically advanced car in the lineup. It also has over-the-air software updates and a 10-year warranty on the battery. Inside, the EX60 resembles other electric family members with a clean, uncluttered look with few buttons and dials.

Volvo is banking the EX60 SUV and Cross Country will boost sales this year. In Canada, Volvo sold 14,500 vehicles in 2025, a record year for the automaker and an increase of 8.2 per cent compared to 2024, according to Volvo Canada.

For Canada, the EX60 will be built at Volvo’s car factory in Torslanda, Sweden; Canadians can start ordering this spring with deliveries to follow in early fall. The EX60 SUV will be available in Canada with two powertrain options – the P12 AWD with up to 640 kilometres of range and the P10 AWD with up to 514 kilometres.
