The Calgary Zoo's "white" black bear has a name as smooth as honey.

"Manuka" (mah-NOO'-kah) was the top choice among 4,000 people who voted for their favourite name from a list that zookeepers had compiled.

Manuka honey is considered one of the most famous in the world.

It has a delicious taste and creamy brown colour not unlike the shade of the unusual bear's coat.

Manuka is a three-year-old female who was rescued last fall from Elkford, B.C., where she had become a nuisance bear.

Her light colouring is attributed to the same recessive genes found in Kermode or spirit bears, although she is not from that specific region in British Columbia.
