Alberta's opposition NDP has asked Edmonton police to look into allegations of bribery involving one of the legislature's government members.
NDP member Brian Mason says he had hoped Premier Jim Prentice would take the action on his own, but says that doesn't seem likely.
The allegations surround Naresh Bhardwaj, the Progressive Conservative backbencher for Edmonton-Ellerslie.
A resident of the riding has sworn out an affidavit alleging Bhardwaj and another man offered him $10,000 to help disqualify a rival for the riding nomination.
Prentice and Justice Minister Jonathan Denis say they are content to let the party handle the issue internally.
Bhardwaj has stepped out of Prentice's cabinet until the issue is resolved and says the accusation is false.
