A 14-year-old girl has died in hospital after she got into trouble while trying to rescue a dog from an Edmonton retention pond.

Emergency officials say rescue crews were called to the north-end pond on Saturday afternoon and pulled the girl from the water about four minutes after arriving.

The teen, who has not been identified by authorities, was placed on life support and taken to hospital where she died Sunday morning.

A family friend says the victim and her younger sister were walking the dog when it got away from them.

The girl, who was said to be a strong swimmer, is believed to have gotten stuck in weeds and mud while trying to reach the animal.

Acting district fire chief Ed Pitman says some local residents tried to rescue the teen but also got caught in the mud. (CTV Edmonton)
