An inmate being escorted to a hospital in northwestern Alberta has escaped.

Mounties say Harley John Lay, who is 29, was being brought by guards to Peace River hospital for medical treatment this morning when an armed, masked man and a driver confronted them.

The prisoner went with the two men and they drove away in a beige Dodge minivan with no licence plate available.

The van was last seen possibly heading towards Highway 2.

Police say the public should not approach Lay or the people he may be with.

Anyone with information as to his whereabouts, the vehicle or the two other men involved in this incident is asked to call Peace River RCMP or a local police department immediately.
