A man has died following a tobogganing accident on the weekend.
Officers and paramedics were called to the Edmonton Ski Club just before 2 a.m. on Sunday.
Police say a 22-year-old man was seriously injured and later pronounced dead in hospital.
Daniel Pelchat (pell-shaw) with Flight Centre Canada identified the man as one of his travel agents, Mitch Lawry.
He says Lawry had been sledding with a friend when he hit his head on a tree.
Lawry was originally from Australia and joined the company a few months ago.
"Mitch was a pretty special person," said Pelchat. "He loved life, he lived life."
He said friends and co-workers were shocking to learn of his death in such a freak accident.
"It's unfortunate it happened this way and it happened so soon.
"So many of us that grew up here in Canada go tobogganing as kids and we don't think anything of it."
Some cities in Canada and the United States have banned tobogganing over concerns about injuries and liability costs.
Sledding enthusiasts recently protested a longtime ban in Hamilton, where a man won a court settlement after his toboggan hit a snow-covered drainpipe and he injured his spine.
