The Calgary Homeless Foundation says it's shocked that one of its board directors has been charged with multiple offences including sexually assaulting a 17-year-old youth.

Robin Wortman, 62, has been suspended from the board. He was also charged with assault with a weapon after a 19-year-old man told police he was chased down the hallway of an apartment on Sunday, and two counts of communication to procure sexual services from someone under 18.

Wortman is to appear in court on Wednesday.

Diana Krecsy, president and CEO of the Calgary Homeless Foundation, said they held an emergency meeting after hearing about the charges on Monday.

"We were shocked today to learn about the allegations and have a deep concern for the well-being of the youth, who we believe demonstrated courage in coming forward," she said.

At a news conference Monday, police said the child abuse unit began investigating in January when the teen came forward.

Police allege the accused identified the youth as vulnerable and offered the boy what he thought was crystal meth but appears to have been GHB, commonly known as the date-rape drug.

Krecsy said Wortman was finishing up the normal rotation of six years on the board.
