Aaron Irving scored 26 seconds into overtime as the Edmonton Oil Kings opened up the 2016-17 Western Hockey League season with a 3-2 win over the host Red Deer Rebels.

Akash Bains and Evan Polei supplied the scoring for the Rebels (0-0-1) as Riley Lamb kicked out 30-of-33 shots in defeat.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Joe Gatenby and Jackson Shepard each struck twice as the Blazers hammered Kelowna.
Rudolfs Balcers, Collin Shirley, Matt Revel, Spencer Bast and Luke Zazula rounded out the offence for Kamloops (1-0-0), which got a 29-save outing from Dylan Ferguson.
Kole Lind and Jake Kryski scored for the Rockets (0-1-0). Michael Herringer allowed four goals on 18 shots before giving way to Brodan Salmond, who stopped 11-of-16 shots in relief.
