An American sailor was the first to cross the finish line in Halifax as part of this year's Marblehead ocean race.

The boat called Spookie from Norwalk, Conn., arrived at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Organizers say the competitors faced light winds Monday, slowing the movement of the more than 60 boats that set out from Massachusetts on Sunday.

Winds picked up at noon Tuesday, with Spookie coming into port five hours ahead of the next group of boats.

The first Canadian boat to finish was expected to be Helm's Deep of Halifax.

The Marblehead to Halifax race is co-sponsored by the Boston Yacht Club and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.
