Halifax's decision to curb garbage totals by implementing clear garbage bags appears to be working.
For the first two months of the project, the city has seen a 31.4 per cent reduction in waste going to the landfill.
Recycling totals increased by 19.4 per cent compared with the same time frame in 2014.
Starting in August, only one in six bags of garbage could be a black bag.
Grass is also no longer allowed in the compost bins.
Similar projects in Markham and Cape Breton yielded the same results.
