A Cormorant helicopter crew successfully hoisted a solo yachtsman from his vessel as it took on water Tuesday in rough seas south of St. John's.
A spokesman for the search and rescue co-ordination centre said the man was expected to arrive in Newfoundland around 6 p.m. local time and the sailor is reported to be in good health.
Sub.-Lt. Blair Gilmore says the man was sailing from Ontario and was planning to cross the Atlantic.
Gilmore says seas reached heights of about six metres during the afternoon at the site 333 kilometres south of St. John's.
The coast guard ship Sir William Alexander, as well as a Cormorant and a Hercules were deployed in the rescue.
