A new cultural centre in Nain, northern Labrador, will showcase the heritage of Labrador Inuit and boost tourism to the region, officials said Friday.

The Illusuak Cultural Centre, to open in summer 2017, will house permanent exhibits and a performing arts space.

The 1,100-square-metre facility is getting $8.1 million in federal funding and $7.4 million from the region's Nunatsiavut government. Nain is the administrative capital of Nunatsiavut.

"Illusuak will give our culture a home, bringing generations together to share experiences and expertise," Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe said.

Parks Canada will be a tenant in the centre where it will provide orientation services for visitors heading into the Torngat Mountains National Park.
