After a newspaper career that has spanned more than four decades, Don Brander has announced his retirement and will step down as publisher of The Guardian in Charlottetown later this month.

Since starting in the Guardian's circulation department 44 years ago, Brander worked his way up to senior leadership positions at newspapers across Ontario and Nova Scotia before returning to Charlottetown.

The newspaper announced on its website that Brander's last day at the Guardian will be Nov. 27.

Julia Kamula, senior vice-president of local solutions for TC Media in Atlantic Canada and Saskatchewan, said Brander kept a strong and steady hand on the business.

He accepted any challenge or initiative handed to him, she said in a statement.

"As such, he has earned the respect of colleagues and competitors alike throughout the country and will be missed by those of us at TC Media and the industry as a whole."
