A severely obese cat that recently arrived at the Fredericton SPCA is on the road to recovery.

Supervisor Andrea Stone says the feline, which they've named Tina, was brought to the shelter by an animal control officer.

At a staggering 17 kilograms, Stone says the cat's health was compromised and they didn't think she would survive.

While the cat's history is unknown, officials suspect she had been living under an enclosed structure.

The cat has been staying at the Hometown Veterinary Hospital in Fredericton, where Dr. Chelsie Armstrong says she's lost a few pounds and seems to be adjusting well to her new diet and exercise regimen.

SPCA officials say pet owners need to understand obesity can cut short an animal's life, and is also considered a form of neglect. (CKHJ)
