The Correctional Service of Canada says it is investigating the assault of an inmate at New Brunswick's Dorchester Penitentiary.
Officials say the assault occurred in the medium security unit of the prison last Sunday.
The injured inmate was taken to hospital to receive treatment.
The service says no staff members or other inmates were hurt during the incident.
An assailant was identified but the service has released few other details, saying only that appropriate actions have been taken.
